Adventures of Gus and Kim: Breakfast in Destin - Sunset Bay Cafe

If you've read some of my other "Adventures of Gus and Kim" posts, then you know we have been vacationing in Destin, Florida for almost 20 years. It's our happy place. Because we spend so much time there, I've started a new series within the Adventures of Gus and Kim posts. Rather than talking about several restaurants within a single post, I'll be talking about just one restaurant per post, and grouping those posts into breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Adventures of Gus and Kim: Breakfast in Destin - Sunset Bay Cafe! We love going out for breakfast/brunch when we're on vacation! Sunset Bay Cafe is one of our favorite breakfast spots in Destin.

We always eat at restaurants when we travel. I know a lot of people enjoy cooking/grilling wherever they're staying, and some opt to cook to save money. Trying new restaurants and revisiting old favorites is part of what we want to include in our vacations. So it's all about what makes your vacation fun for you!

During our visit to Destin in October 2017, we tried a little place called Sunset Bay Cafe, which is located in the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. We've driven by it more times than I can count, but for some reason, never stopped. Since it's inside the Linkside Conference Center, I think maybe we just assumed it catered to the business crowd. We were wrong (that's what we get for assuming, right?), and it is now going to be one of our don't-miss spots.

If the weather permits, I highly recommend sitting outside. The seating overlooks Choctawhatchee Bay and has lovely landscaping. One minor drawback might be that it is next to the pool, and I could see it being noisy during peak tourist season. We were there in early October and it was fine. There is also a seasonal Tiki bar, so maybe that's how you deal with any noise in the summer! Ha!

Since we've only been there once, I can't review the whole menu, but what we had was delicious. The service was prompt, friendly, and we really enjoyed our time there. I had the Breakfast Croissant (I removed the top half of the croissant to cut back on the carbs; Gus didn't have any problem gobbling it down). It contained two scrambled eggs, cheese, garlic aioli, tomato, and bacon. It also comes with onion, but you know I skipped those, right? It included a side of breakfast potatoes that were pretty awesome. The portion of potatoes was perfect for me since I don't like to waste food, but I also don't want to eat a ton of carbs that I don't need. I really enjoyed my breakfast, especially since it came with a view of the water.

Gus had a bacon and cheese omelet (his go-to breakfast) and English muffin, while Buddy had two eggs over-easy with toast. They both had sides of breakfast potatoes, and shared a stack of three pancakes. (I tried them, and they were yummy!)

They were in the process of doing some renovations to the conference center, but it was still easy to get in and out, the view was still incredible, and the food and hospitality were top-notch. We will definitely be back.

You don't have to be staying in the Sandestin resort to eat at any of the restaurants there. If you're staying elsewhere, you'll just need to stop at the security gate and get a free pass from the guard.
