If you've been hanging out with me for awhile, you know that I use sheet masks a lot. I love them for a little extra boost of moisture. I picked up this Tony Moly Anti-Aging Snail Hydro-Gel Face Sheet Mask from Sephora. I admit, I was a little skeeved by the word "snail", but I figured I'd probably put worse on my face without realizing it, so why not?
First, let's look at the ingredient list:
Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Snail Secretion Filtrate, Mineral Oil, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan), Ceratonia Siliqua Gum, Cellulose Gum, Polyacrylate-13, Methylparaben, Sodium Polyacrylate, Polyisobutene, Polysorbate 20, Euphorbia Supina Stem Extract, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.
The package says "Age-Defying", but I don't really see anything in the ingredient list that is a proven anti-aging ingredient. Now, that said, I didn't use the mask for anti-aging - I used it for hydration, which is really all I ever expect from my masks. And technically, I guess "age-defying" isn't necessarily the same as "anti-aging".
It's sealed inside a foil package, much like all other sheet masks. Inside the foil package, the mask is inside a hard, clear, plastic pouch. This is quite nice, as it prevents the serum from spilling all over the place as you remove the mask.
The mask is actually in two parts, which I actually prefer over the one-piece masks.
Each section of the mask has two coverings, a thicker covering and a thinner one. I'm not sure which one is the front and which is the back because it doesn't really indicate which is which. I assumed the thicker covering was on the "back" or the part that goes next to your skin.
And here is where I got really excited! This was the best-fitting mask I have ever tried! The openings for the eyes were narrow enough that I was able to position the mask so that my undereye area was covered. I didn't have to trim away part of the side of the mask to make my own undereye coverings! Same for the mouth area! It fit well around my mouth. And the hydro-gel adhered to my skin like a second-skin.
There wasn't an excessive amount of serum on the mask, and it even seemed to shrink a bit once it neared the 30 minute mark, but that was amazing, too. When I removed the mask, the combination of the serum and the slight compression of the mask had really, smoothed out my skin. Fine lines had completely disappeared! Deeper lines were dramatically lessened. I was truly amazed!
Unfortunately, I applied this mask right before bed, so I wasn't able to gauge how long the effects lasted. But this is a mask I would use before I went to an event, for sure. I need to order a couple more and use them in the daytime so I can see how long the effects last.
The downside is that the cost of the mask is $9 at Sephora (update: apparently no longer available at Sephora). Which isn't horrible if you're only using it for special occasions. And you can actually get it much cheaper at Amazon - a 5 pk for about $20 (price may vary over time), or 2 sets of five for around $31. Maybe get some of your friends to go in on it with you! Have a girl's night party!
Also, just to note - I have sensitive skin and I didn't have any issues with the serum. There is very little fragrance in it, and I didn't have any irritation. This one is amazing, ladies! Which brings me to my fear. Every time I find a product that I absolutely love, they either reformulate it or discontinue it. I noticed that at Sephora, this product now says there are only a few left in stock. (Yes, my fear came true - it's no longer available at Sephora!) The Tony Moly US site is
