Product Review: Maple Holistics Dead Sea Mud Mask & Anti-Aging Serum

You may have noticed that I've been focusing a lot on skincare lately. There are a couple of reasons for that. One, that I've mentioned before, is I've discovered as I get older, it often takes a little more time to find the right products for my skin. So I find myself looking for new skincare products a lot more frequently than in the past. Another reason (and this one probably applies to a lot of you as well) is that the seasons are changing, and I've always found that I need to switch up my skincare routine with the seasons.

{enjoy the view} Product Review: Maple Holistics Dead Sea Mud Mask & Vitamin C Anti-Aging Serum

One product that I use faithfully year round is an antioxidant. I feel that using an antioxidant in conjunction with a sunscreen is probably one of the most important anti-aging steps in a skincare routine. When Maple Holistics contacted me about reviewing some of their products, I definitely wanted to try their Vitamin C Anti-Aging Serum.

Maple Holistics Vitamin C Anti-Aging Serum

Main ingredients: The main antioxidant in this serum is obviously the Vitamin C. It is in the form of sodium ascorbyl phosphate, which is water-soluble and considered to be very stable. I like that. Other good antioxidants on the ingredient list are ferulic acid, Vitamin E, and Vitamin A. This product also contains hyaluronic acid, which is great at increasing the skin's moisture, as well as preventing moisture loss.
Packaging: This serum comes packaged in a 1 oz. amber glass dropper bottle.
Fragrance: No real discernible scent; no added fragrance.
How to use: The instructions say "Lightly massage onto face with fingers after washing in morning and evening to brighten, tighten, and smooth skin."
Appearance/consistency: This is a clear pale yellow liquid that has a watery consistency, but with a slightly viscous feel to it (probably from the xanthan gum and/or the hydroxyethylcellulose). It absorbs quickly and completely.
My experience: I found this product easy to dispense from the dropper, and it also applied easily to my skin. Absorption was quick and complete. Unfortunately, for some reason, it caused some breakouts on my face. I'm not sure why, because it has very few ingredients and no added fragrance. However, I was able to use it on my neck and décolletage without any problems at all. I especially like it for my décolletage, and I've seen some improvement in the smoothness and tone of the skin there.
Price: 1 oz. $11.77 (10% discount with 2 or more), which is actually a great price for a product with both sodium acorbyl phosphate and ferulic acid.

The second product I received was the Dead Sea Mud Mask. I do use masks year round, too, but I usually use sheet masks. However, I was intrigued by this product and anxious to see how it worked for me.

Maple Holistics Dead Sea Mud Mask

Main ingredients: Dead Sea mud, Bulgarian lavender, German chamomile, clary sage, green myrtle
Packaging: This product comes in a black domed jar.
Fragrance: Lavender, chamomile, & sage - a very light scent
How to use: The instructions say "Apply a thin layer over the face, and leave until dry (average length of time: ten minutes), then rinse."
Appearance/consistency: It looks pretty much like you would expect - like charcoal-colored mud. :-) It has a slippery consistency that makes it very easy to apply. It starts to dry right away and you can feel it tighten on the skin as it dries.
My experience: I haven't used masks like this for years (I usually use sheet masks), but I liked this one. It felt good on my skin. Even though it tightened as it dried, it didn't make my skin feel as though all of the moisture had been removed. It was extremely easy to rinse away, and once my skin was rinsed, it felt very smooth and soft. I also like that it doesn't have any added fragrance, just the essential oils.
Price: $13.77 (10% discount with 2 or more)
