Polka Dot Burlap Table Cover tutorial

What can you do with a piece of burlap, paint, and a foam spouncer? Make a fun table cover!!

I have a small, round dining table in the breakfast nook of my kitchen. Since we're a small family, that's the table we use for holiday meals. The center of it is set with a large circle of marble, so I decided rather than use a typical tablecloth, I would cut a piece of burlap to cover the marble - leaving the wood edges exposed.

You could do this in any shape or size - or even cut place mats! You can finish the edges with seam binding, fray-check, or leave them unfinished - which is what I did.

Since I plan to use this cover for Thanksgiving, I picked orange as the color of my polka dots.

What I used:
Ceramcoat Clear Textile Medium
Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Orange Soda
Spouncers, Set of 3, 1-1/4-Inch
40" Wide X 1 Yard Long Natural Burlap
Misc: scissors, chalk to mark cutting line

After cutting the burlap, I mixed 2 parts orange paint with 1 part textile medium.

Then I started in the center of the circle, and started stamping!

It took about 5 minutes to stamp the entire thing! And I love it!

As a matter of fact, I love it so much, I've decided to do one in silver and gold for Christmas!

This is another easy craft that the kids could do, too. You could even have them do handprints rather than polka dots - making it a keepsake! If you want to keep your table cover and plan to try to wash it, you will need to follow the instructions on the bottle of textile medium in order to make the paint washable.

  2. Your table is beautiful! Orange and red are my accent colours so this would work well. How easy is it to wash the burlap? Might be a problem if I leave the edges unfinished!? LOVE!

    1. Thanks, Sarah! I haven't washed it yet. The paint has to dry for 7 days, then you have to iron it to heat set it. I'm not exactly sure how you're supposed to wash burlap - and yes, I think the unfinished edges might be an issue if you plan to wash it a lot. I'm thinking spot cleaning, or perhaps just a quick handwash? Honestly, since this cost less than $5 and took less than 5 minutes to make, I probably won't attempt to wash it once it's beyond spot cleaning.

    1. Thanks, Melinda! I want to make a Christmas one, too! I haven't decided if 'll use the same burlap or a more tightly woven one - and I'll probably add seam binding to the edges as well.
