(This is a sponsored post. I was responsible for designing the project and JoAnn Fabric & Crafts supplied the fabric.)
(A funny little thing: I couldn't decide which side of the chevron fabric was the "right" side. There were no markings and they both were the same color! Finally, I just picked a side. After I made the basket, I saw the fabric on JoAnn's website. No, I have no idea why I didn't look there first! But they show the other side as the right side. Honestly, I think this fabric could be reversible!)
As I mentioned yesterday, this is what I used:
- 7/8 yd. HGTV Chevron Chic fabric in Citrine
- 1/2 yd. HGTV Urban Blossoms fabric in light blue
- abt 3/4 yd. heavyweight sew-in interfacing
- Misc: pins, scissors, iron, thread, needle
How to make the basket:
Note: I used a 1/4" seam allowance on all seams.
First, cut out all pieces:
- Cut one 12"x32" rectangle from main fabric, contrast fabric, & interfacing (3 rectangles total)
- Cut one 10.5" circle from main fabric, contrast fabric, & interfacing (3 circles total)
- Cut, on bias, one 2"X12.5" rectangle from contrast fabric
- Cut, on bias, one 2"X32" rectangle, angled on ends from contrast fabric
Now, you're ready to start sewing. Note: I used a 1/4" seam allowance on all seams.
- Lay the 12"X32" interfacing rectangle on the wrong side of the contrast fabric; pin or baste in place.
- Flip this over so the contrast fabric is on top, then pin the main fabric to contrast fabric, right sides together.
- Stitch the top edge (one of the 32" sides).
- Press seam open, then open up fabric and fold it so that the wrong sides are now together.
- Press top seam.
- Baste sides and bottom together, then top stitch 1/4" from top edge.
- Turn fabric so right sides are together, then stitch side seam (12" side).
- Fold the 2"X12.5" rectangle of contrast fabric in half, wrong sides & long sides together.
- Press. This is the side seam binding.
- Stitch this binding to the side seam, matching raw edges.
- Trim seam as close as possible.
- Fold seam binding over the seam, and top stitch in place.
Baste the 3 circles together, interfacing between the fabric, right sides facing out.
- Pin circle/basket bottom to sides; contrast to contrast, main to main, with contrast fabric on the outside.
- Use plenty of pins and position them so that you can sew over them.
- Stitch in place, Take your time!
- Stitch long seam binding, right sides together. Press seam open, then fold binding in half, raw edges together.
- Stitch binding to seam around bottom of basket.
- Trim seam as close as possible, then fold binding over seam, and stitch in place. Since my fabric/interfacing was so thick, I opted to handstitch this last piece into place, but if your fabric/interfacing is thinner, you can do it on the machine.
- Turn basket right side out, and fold over top edge.
That's it! Looks great, right?
You could also add trim, but I opted not to on this particular basket.
If you give it a try, I'd love to see your project!
