D-I-Y Sewing Machine Makeover

As you know, I love having things in my home that belonged to my ancestors. I truly believe that no matter where you go in life, you should never, ever forget from where you came.

Gus and I are lucky to have several pieces of furniture (and pictures) that belonged to our grandparents (and even great-grandparents). One thing we have is an old Singer treadle sewing machine that belonged to his grandmother.

It hadn't been used in years, and was in really bad shape - but when Gus's mom asked if we would like to have it, I couldn't say no. It sat in our garage for several years, and eventually, I decided not to try to restore the machine itself, but to just redo the cabinet and use it as a table.

There was a lot of work involved because there was a ton of old stain and varnish on the wood. The top had some damage as well. Since the wood had been compromised in some spots, we opted to paint it to help hide some of the defects.

Gus spent a TON of time taking it completely apart, using stripper and a sander to remove all the old gunk, and then wiping it down before painting it. He used a wire brush for the metal stand.

After brushing the metal, he used Rustoleum black glossy enamel spray paint to repaint it. I think it looks like new!

As you can see, the drawers were a mess!! A lot of detailed sanding, a couple of coats of Behr Premium Plus Ultra (with primer in the paint) in Havana Coffee, and new satin nickel drawer pulls, and it looks great!

The pictures really don't do it justice. The color is a deeper, coffee brown - but the lighting makes it look more of a chocolate brown.

This is a picture from a Christmas blog post I did - you can see how well this "table" works for creating little vignettes for the different seasons.

And this picture is obviously from Halloween...

And this one is "spring" (actually it was just a couple of weeks ago, but the tulips looks so "Spring-y"!)...

I think Gus really did a great job, and it means a lot to both of us to have this piece of furniture that belonged to his grandma!

  1. Wow, you did a fabulous job. I have a old machine too, have not decided to restore it yet, but maybe now is the time! Did you take out the machine or leave it in? These tables are so heavy! I just started a new link party and would love for you to come over and share your post or any social media sites. Talkin’ About Thursday - http://designeddecor.com/talkin-about-thursday-link-party4/

    1. Thanks! We opted to leave the machine out for now. We may redo it at some future date, but we figured why bother right now if the cabinet was going to be closed. I will definitely check out your link party - thanks for the invite!
