Adventures of Gus and Kim: Breakfast in Destin - Another Broken Egg Cafe

If you've read any of the other "Adventures of Gus and Kim" posts, then you probably know that we have been vacationing in Destin, Florida since 1998. It is absolutely one of our favorite spots. Because we spend so much time there, I'm starting a new series within the Adventures of Gus and Kim posts. Rather than putting a bunch of restaurants in a single post, I'll be concentrating on one restaurant per post, and grouping them into breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
 

Something about our travels that I may not have mentioned before - we don't cook when we're on vacation. One night we may order take-out, but we always eat food from restaurants. We really enjoy trying new restaurants and revisiting old favorites, so to us, it's not an extravagance, it's just part of what we want to include in our vacations.

We usually start the day with breakfast/brunch some time between 10am and noon. That way Gus can do an early morning bike ride and I can catch a couple more hours of sleep before we head out for the day.


One of our favorite places to eat breakfast/brunch has always been Another Broken Egg Cafe (ABE). This is a chain, but since there isn't one anywhere close to where we live, it's a treat for us to eat there. It reminds us of the First Watch restaurants in our neck of the woods - and we love First Watch. We try to eat at ABE at least once every trip to Destin.


ABE has three restaurants in the Destin area, but we eat at the Grand Boulevard or Baytowne Wharf locations. We usually stay in Sandestin or Miramar Beach, so those locations are closer and more convenient. Both of these locations offer indoor and outdoor seating. (The other location is in Destin, across from Gulfshore Drive and in the same area as Publix and Target..)

They have a pretty good-sized menu, which includes both breakfast and lunch items. I've never had any of the lunch items, but Gus likes their burgers, and he is kind of picky about burgers. My two favorite meals here are the Sunrise Spinach Scrambler and the Granola, Fruit & Quinoa, while Gus favors their Supreme Omelet.

The Sunrise Spinach Scrambler is pretty much what you'd expect it to be: scrambled eggs with fresh spinach, bacon, onion, and Monterey Jack cheese. I usually skip the onions. You also get an English muffin and a choice of grits or country potatoes. You can substitute City Grits™ or fresh fruit for an upcharge. You can't go wrong with any of the side options.


My favorite? City Grits. It's one of my favorite versions of grits, and I'm craving some just writing about them! They're so creamy - full of cheese, topped with tomatoes, bacon, and green onions. Again, I skip the onions or just pick them off the top.


The Granola, Fruit, and Quinoa is a dish that I love, but I usually only have it once or twice a year due to the number of carbs. The granola is so good - they make it in-house, and it's roasted with honey. There is a generous scoop of (cold) blueberry-infused quinoa (yum!) in the middle, and then they add bananas that have been rolled in toasted coconut, strawberries, and blueberries. Everything is drizzled with Chobani Vanilla Greek yogurt and you get a little pitcher of coconut milk. Honestly, I'd rather eat this than eggs, but soooo many carbs!


The Supreme Omelet has sausage, bacon, mushrooms, onions, and Cheddar Jack cheese. Gus orders this one on a regular basis - and it does look pretty tasty! Like the Sunrise Spinach Scrambler, this comes with an English muffin and your choice of grits or country potatoes.


If you like pancakes, Belgian waffles, or French toast, those are great options as well, and can be added as sides. The pancakes are dinner-plate size and are available in so many flavors. The Biscuit Beignets are amazing, too.

As I mentioned earlier, this is a chain similar to First Watch. They do have locations in several states, with more opening every day. You can find them in AL, CA, FL, GA, IN, KY, LA, MS, NC, OH, SC, TN, TX. Why can't the ones in KY and OH be closer??
