But sometimes, your hair changes, and the products that you love suddenly aren't giving you the same results. That's another one of the wonderful (and by wonderful, I mean obnoxious) things that entering your 50's brings - or at least it did for me. I had to start dealing with covering grey hairs and my highlighted hair is now drier on the ends despite regular trims. The dryness started looking almost crispy after blowdrying on low heat, even using a paddle brush and smoothing products. I was even having difficulty smoothing it with a flat iron. My favorite shampoo and conditioner from Living proof.® and Bumble and bumble just weren't working as well for me anymore. It wasn't the products, it was the changes in my hair. Using heavier conditioners just made my hair too soft to hold any style. So when Sephora offered an Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Haircare Set as a Beauty Insider 500 point choice, I grabbed it.
I had never used Alterna Haircare products before, so I was excited to give these a try. When I read about the Anti-Aging Replenishing products, it said that they were sulfate-free, and that they restore and rebalance moisture, protect color, and improve the appearance of dry, brittle hair. That's exactly what I needed, so fingers crossed! This set contained:
- Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo 1.35 oz.
- Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Conditioner 1.35 oz.
- Caviar Repair Multi Vitamin Heat Protection Spray 0.85 oz
- Caviar CC Cream 10-in-1 Complete Correction Leave-In Hair Perfector 0.85 oz
I'll start with the shampoo and conditioner. The consistency and scent of both is nice, and what I would expect from a product in this price range. I don't like the scent as well as Living Proof®, but I don't dislike it, and scent isn't my main concern here. The shampoo lathers well, especially for a sulfate-free product, and rinses away easily. I like the way my hair feels soft even after just shampooing. The conditioner also leaves my hair feeling soft and clean after rinsing. It doesn't feel like it has anything left on it, and I like that. But the real test is after my hair is dry.
After I towel-dry my hair (I use a microfiber turban to squeeze out the excess water) I apply the Alterna Caviar CC Cream, then dry my hair on low heat. The CC Cream is a 10-in-1 product that provides: moisture, shine, smoothness, softness, UV protection, manageability, strength, anti-breakage, heat protection and light hold. It has a light fragrance that dissipates quickly. Again, it's not my favorite scent, but it doesn't linger, and I'm more concerned with how the product works. And I love how it works. It felt kind of weird at first - putting this on damp hair - because it's a thick cream. But it has made such a difference in my hair!
With the Alterna products, my hair has been much smoother, and doesn't feel dry. I apply some Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil after blowdrying, and that makes it even smoother. (I'm almost out of that, and I'm thinking of trying Alterna's Bamboo Smooth Kendi Oil instead of repurchasing.) Straightening with the flat iron has been so much easier as well.
The other product in the set was the Caviar Repair Multi-Vitamin Heat Protection Spray. This is a lightweight conditioning-protection product that is applied to clean, damp hair. I found this easier to apply to hair than the CC Cream because of the thinner consistency - and it does a great job of protecting from heat - but it just doesn't provide enough smoothing/hydration for me. It's actually very similar to the Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer that I have purchased (and loved) in the past. If my hair hadn't decided that it needed more moisture, I would probably prefer the Repair Multi-Vitamin Protection Spray over the CC Cream, but aging and all that, you know.
Right now, my hair is loving the Alterna Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner, as well as the CC Cream. Of course, my hormones, greys, or whatever else may decide in a month that they no longer like those products, and I'll be on a new quest - but for now, this is working great. I have a couple of tips on purchasing if you're interested in trying these products. If you want to try the travel size of the shampoo & conditioner, that is 1.35 oz. and is sold on Sephora for about $9 each. If you want to buy full-size products, Amazon is the way to go. The products are almost half price there and you can get free shipping if you're a Prime member. The links I have provided for your convenience are my Amazon affiliate links, if you choose to use them, it doesn't cost you any more, and I earn a tiny commission for making it easier for you to find the products. If you would rather purchase them at Sephora so you can earn points, they do sell everything there, but the cost is almost double. I'm a VIB Rouge member at Sephora, but I'd rather give up points than pay twice as much for something! HA!
By the way, I'm going to be doing a post on anti-aging hair products - what they are, what they do, and whether they're necessary. So keep an eye out for that soon! Also, I'd love to connect with you on Instagram and Snapchat (enjoythevue)!
