Product Review: Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer

As I've previously mentioned, I recently purchased Sephora's Sun Safety Kit for 2013. It was filled with 19 different products related to sun safety - several of which were sunscreens. Today, I'm reviewing another one of those sunscreens: Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 40.

In my review for Ole Henriksen Protect The Truth™ Sunscreen, I told you about some of the issues I usually face (pun intended, LOL!) when using a sunscreen on my face. I call them the "Big 4":
  • makes my face shiny/greasy
  • causes breakouts and/or clogged pores
  • makes my eyes sting and water
  • fragrance is either irritating to my skin or unpleasant to my nose

These are pretty typical occurrences with sunscreen, so you may have even experienced some of them yourself. When I try a new facial sunscreen, these are the things I'm watching for - I want a product that protects without causing those issues. Or at least as few of them as possible.

I've tried a couple of Josie Maran products in the past. They haven't worked well for me. But I decided to give this one a try anyway!

This particular product is marketed as a facial moisturizer with a broad-spectrum SPF. I don't know a lot about argan & pomegranate oils - other than they're popular right now and are supposed to not only moisturize, but also fight signs of aging. This product does not contain any artificial fragrances and is cruelty-free.
From Sephora.com: "Unlike traditional sunscreens, this natural formula is infused with Josie's signature ingredient, Argan Oil, which repairs and reverses damage caused by the sun, fights sign of aging, and improves skintone for a radiant, renewed complexion."

Consistency: The product has a fairly thin, slightly runny consistency that is very lightweight when applied. It's easy to apply and absorbs quickly.

Fragrance: Smells slightly fruity!

Big 4: no extra greasiness, no clogged pores/breakouts, no stinging, great scent!

Ingredients (from Sephora.com):
-Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide: Full spectrum sun protection against UVA/UVB rays.
-Argan Oil: Replenishes and repairs skin cells.
-Pomegranate Oil: Full of antioxidants which improve elasticity and tone of skin.
-Jojoba Oil: Conditions the skin.

Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Hexadecene Copolymer, Decy Oeate, Dimethicone, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Isopropyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Organic Argan Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Capryl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Hexylene Glycol, Camellia Sinesis Leaf Extract, Organic Aloe Barbadnesis (Aloe) Leaf Extract, Organic Chamomilla Recutina (Matricaria) Extract, Organic Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Oil, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil, Natural Fragrance (Apricot Oil).

Size/Price: Available in a 0.5 oz. glass bottle with a pump for $14, and a 2 oz. glass bottle with a pump for $32. I love that you can get a smaller size to try!

Repurchase? I would absolutely consider repurchasing this product. I'm impressed with how well it absorbs yet leaves my skin feeling incredibly soft. The scent is great, and I'm pleased with the antioxidants it contains. I love that it's in a pump bottle because that greatly reduces the chance that the active ingredients will be exposed to air - when can reduce or eliminate their effectiveness. I think the price is average for this type of product. My one complaint is that I do see a slightly whitish cast to my skin after applying - so I assume it contains a good bit of titanium dioxide. It's not really an issue, I just apply a little darker makeup to counteract it. Even though this was included in my Sun Safety Kit, I couldn't verify whether or not this product was recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
