I've been doing a lot of thinking about this product.
Have you noticed how once mixed, the ingredients separate, leaving a bunch of thick white gunk in the bottom of the bottle?
Ew.
I know that if you mix castile soap with vinegar, it causes a reaction that unsaponifies the soap - reducing it back to glycerin and oils - which inhibits it's cleaning ability. So once you mix them, you reduce the effectiveness of both. I'm thinking that this is what is happening to this magic mix of Dawn dish soap and vinegar that everyone is using on their showers and sinks.
I know, I know. If it ain't broke, why fix it? But I think it IS broken. There shouldn't be all that separation - and if mixing the two reduces effectiveness, why mix them?
Another thing that worries me a little is that when I spray this stuff in the shower, even with my diluted version, the smell makes me cough a lot. I don't know if it's just me, if little particles are getting in the air when I spray the solution, or if I'm reacting to the chemical reaction between the vinegar and Dawn.
Is it as convenient to use two products? Of course not. But what if one works just as well?
Hmmm, that looks pretty good!
Wonder how it works on faucets?
Hmmmm, that looks pretty good, too! How about the inside of the shower, where the soap really tends to build-up?
Before & after, again...
So basically, we've all been mixing up the Dawn/vinegar, when all we needed to do was dilute Dawn with water! So let's stop the madness and just use Dawn!!
Scum Buster 3.0 (and the best!)
1 part Dawn dishwashing liquid
1 part warm water
Pros:
- Only use one product
- Diluting it 1:1 with water brings the cost down even more
- Solution is thinner, so it's easier to rinse away (I think you might even be able to dilute the Dawn even more than 50%!)
- No nasty smell
- I can't think of any!
You might be able to use straight vinegar as well, but I didn't test that because I really don't like the smell of vinegar. If anyone tries it, let me know!
What do you use to clean your shower?

Interesting! My sister-in-law and I joke about all the combos of Dawn, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda out there to clean different things - "just mix a little of this and a little of that." Maybe we don't even need to mix them!

I don't think we do! I swear, by mixing, we're reducing (or eliminating) the best properties of each individual product! Thanks for stopping by!
