My favorite...hair products!

Everyone has those favorite products that they just can't - or won't - do without. We always manage to fit them into the budget, even if something else has to go. Today, I'm talking hair products...I have a few favorites that must be in my possession at all times.

My #1 favorite, can't-live-without hair product is Sebastian Shaper hairspray. I've been using this stuff for over 20 years now. I've tried the knock-offs, other salon hairsprays, other drugstore sprays, but nothing - NOTHING - beats this one. This one is the best, so why try to beat perfection? There are several versions, but I like the original Shaper the best. It goes on "dry" - there's none of that weighted down, wet, nastiness. You can brush it out & restyle. It's awesome. I love it so much, I'd marry it. If it was a man. And if I wasn't already married. You get the idea. I love it! Don't even get me started about how Costa Rican airport security confiscated my brand new can. Yes, it was 8 years ago. No, I have neither forgiven nor forgotten. Prices range from $8 (on sale at Ulta) to $12 (at my salon) to $17 (Ulta regular price) for a 10.6 oz. aerosol can.

My #2 favorite is Aveda's Firmata hairspray. Combined with Shaper, this stuff rocks. No, really - it's hard as a rock. I use this on my "bump" to keep it in place. I also use it when I have a messy updo. I have a lot of hair - and it's thick & heavy - so when I do an updo, the weight of my hair tends to pull it down after a couple of hours. Firmata keeps everything just where I want it. I can go out in the wind without my hair ending up all over the place. Heck, I've even ridden rides at King's Island and my hair didn't get messed up. This one is a non-aerosol, so it goes on wet - but it dries to a very firm hold. You can still easily brush it out - love that! $18 for 8.5 oz., but it lasts a long time for me.

My #3 favorite is a new favorite. This one is from Tresemme's Smooth line, and is called Smooth Iron Style & Hold Styling Spray. It's a heat protectant and styling spray in one. I picked this one up at Target a few weeks ago and I really like it. In general, I do like Tresemme's products (I use their clarifying shampoo), and I used to use their Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray. As I mentioned, my hair is thick & heavy, so any volume I can create gets weighed down easily. Especially the day I wash my hair - and even the day after. This stuff allows a little volume to stay in while also protecting my hair from the flat iron. It's a nice product, and it's only around $4 for 8 oz.

And the last one is another Aveda product. It's from the Brillant line, and is called Damage Control. It's basically a heat protectant, but it also offers UV protection and is supposed to reduce breakage from combing.. It's the one that I used before I found the Tresemme. Right now, I'm using it on the days that I don't use the Tresemme. It's $17 for 8.5 oz. compared to $4 for 8 oz. of the Tresemme.

If you're interested in trying any of these products, I recommend signing up for emails on the Tresemme & Aveda websites. You'll get coupons from Tresemme, and coupon codes & special deals from Aveda. I usually wait until they have free shipping and extra samples. Sometimes, you can find good deals on Amazon, too, so don't forget to check there. The best time to buy Shaper is when Ulta has it on sale for $7.99/can. They limit you to 4 cans, but I don't buy more than that anyway. And in case you wondered, I'm not being compensated in any way for recommending these products. My opinions are strictly my own, and I'm sharing them for free. Don't you feel special now?

So those are the products that keep my hair looking it's best. I get cranky when the bottles start getting low. And I don't like other people to use my hair products either. I need to know that I won't run out unexpectedly. What hair products do you need to keep you (and your hair) happy?

  2. There are a few hair products I can't live without too. Living Proof No Frizz Weightless Styling Spray is my holy grail product. I live in Florida, the capital of frizz, and this spray works perfectly to keep my hair nice and smooth. It also has great hold and works if you blow dry, flat iron or use a curling iron like I do. It's also so light that I can't feel it in my hair at all. There's none of that icky stickiness or crunchiness either. I really love Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Primer as well as their Thickening Creme Contour. The primer hydrates, zaps frizz, provides thermal protection and makes my hair manageable and shiny. Creme Contour is a paste that I use on my finished style for that piece-y separation that's so on trend right now. It also adds volume, shape and light hold. My style lasts several days when I use this. I also like Got2b Mind Blowing hairspray, which gives me flexible hold that looks natural but is actually quite strong. It's one of those drugstore gems that I use nearly every day. For a little stronger hold, Nexxus Comb Thru is great. It's more of a medium hold hairspray so I use it when I don't want my style to move much. For extra strong hold, there's TIGI Masterpiece, which I use when I do an updo or a slicked back ponytail. My hair definitely doesn't budge at all when I use this. I do have a few new favorites: Living Proof Root Lifting Spray is awesome for volume. Rusk Thickr mousse truly makes my hair look and feel thicker and doesn't weigh it down at all.

These are a few of my favorites. My hair is medium in texture and, for the most part, straight. I usually air dry overnight and then use a curling iron in the morning. I don't know if these products would work for thicker hair, but they work like a charm for me. Just thought I'd share. Loved your review of Misha BB cream. I bought some based on your recommendation. I'm loving it so far.

    1. This is an older post, so I have some new favorites - and you've mentioned some of them! I'm a big fan of Living Proof products. I use their shampoo and conditioner(I alternate between a couple of versions), as well as the Prime Style Extender (can't be without that!), No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream, and Dry Shampoo. I'm also a HUGE fan of Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil conditioner (I mix it with the Living Proof), Invisible Oil Primer, and Invisible Oil. I need to do an updated favorites post!

I'm glad you liked the BB cream! It's still a favorite, although I've been trying some others just because my skin has been going through some changes and I wanted to see what else was out there. Thanks for stopping by and sharing all of your favorites!
